Tour 5: About

Jewish Whitechapel -Commercial Road

Whitechapel Road with its very wide pavements, was a social hub for the Jewish East End, perfect for the daytime market and Saturday evening promenades.

This area became prominent after the mass immigration of Jews mainly from eastern Europe from 1880 onwards. This immigration was poor and desperately needed work and decent accommodation to house large families.

However, the Jewish inherent will to survive and to thrive brought industry, innovation, education and prosperity in the space of 50-60 years or 2 generations there would be a steady trickle out of the poverty into the leafier suburbs of the great melting-pot which was London. The area remained a haven for the oppressed and the immigrant.
